2024 Senior double victory
Roosters Make History with Double Victory in 2024 Grand Finals!
In what will be remembered as a monumental day for the Roosters, August 31, 2024, saw the club claim not one but two premiership titles, with both the Division 1 and Division 2 men's teams defeating Burleigh in a thrilling double-header at the Gold Coast Hockey Association Grand Finals. Division 2 Men’s Grand Final: A New Era of Champions The day kicked off with the Division 2 men’s final, and it was a battle from the start. Both teams locked horns in a defensive struggle, with neither side willing to give an inch. However, in the 8th minute, Roosters’ rising star Gus Magor broke the deadlock, slotting home the opening goal from a penalty corner. His strike set the tone for a high-intensity match. Burleigh’s Khye Poulton quickly responded with an equalizer, and as tensions escalated, the cards started to fly—both teams received green and yellow cards, reflecting the fierce nature of the contest. But the Roosters were far from done. Tomas Newport, the club’s Division 1 coach, stepped up with a perfectly executed penalty corner, sending the Roosters back into the lead, 2-1. The score didn’t stay static for long. Jackson Andrews brought Burleigh level once more, making it 2-2, and for a moment, it felt like the momentum might swing Burleigh’s way. Enter Gus Magor again, the undisputed Player of the Final, who hammered home two more field goals to complete his hat trick and cement Roosters' victory. With a 4-2 triumph, the Roosters’ Division 2 team secured their first-ever premiership title, a historic moment for the club. Division 1 Men’s Grand Final: A Battle to the Very End As the Division 1 team took to the field later in the day, the stakes couldn’t have been higher. Both teams started cautiously, with heavy defense dominating the first quarter. It wasn’t until the 27th minute that Burleigh’s Louis Hassum found the back of the net, giving Burleigh a slim lead. Hassum struck again in the 46th minute, putting Burleigh up 2-0 and leaving the Roosters with a mountain to climb. But the Roosters are never ones to back down. Digging deep and focusing on their trademark teamwork, the comeback began. In the 51st minute, Daniel Springfield delivered a crucial goal to bring the Roosters back into the contest, 2-1. As the match clock ticked down, it seemed like time was running out, but in the dying moments, Leroy Phillips launched a stunning drag flick into the net, sending the game into shootouts. Shootouts are always nerve-wracking, but Roosters' goalkeeper Aydan Carlini proved to be the hero of the moment, making save after save and keeping Burleigh scoreless. On the attacking side, Roosters’ sharpshooters rose to the occasion. Sam Basile scored first, Cade Coghlan followed, and it was Sam Systa who delivered the final blow, securing Roosters' 3-0 victory in the shootout. This victory marks the first Division 1 senior premiership in Roosters history, an extraordinary achievement that capped off an unforgettable day for the club. A Day for the History Books With both Division 1 and Division 2 titles secured, the Roosters have written a new chapter in their history. This double victory is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and unity of everyone involved with the club—from the players to the coaching staff, and the unwavering support of our fans. Special congratulations go to managers Tony Basile and Sharni Mott, and to our coaches, Tomas Newport and Christian "Boofa" Mott, whose leadership was instrumental in guiding both teams to victory. Roosters, this is our year! 2024—double champions, and the start of a new era! |
